This is how the rarest steel in Japan "Tamahagane (玉鋼)" is made. The word tama means "jewel" and hagane means "steel". Hirata-san is one of few blacksmiths in the whole country who still produces this legendary steel and makes Japanese swords and knives with it. The process of making Tamahagane takes almost 48-72 hours, including preparation and clean-up. Once a fire is lit to the furnace, it requires your constant attention - you should add iron sand and coal almost every 10 mins, while getting rid of impurities from the bottom every once in a while.

This video was filmed at Hirata Blacksmiths (平田鍛刀場) on the outskirts of Tokyo. Sukehira Hirata and Nodoka Hirata are a married couple who craft not only Japanese blades, but blades made of the rarest steel in Japan.

Have you guys heard of Nokogiri-yama (鋸山)? It’s a popular hiking spot in Chiba. What many people don’t know though is that there are old ruins hidden deep in the forest of the mountain!

It looks like something straight out of a Ghibli movie. They’re actually the remains of a stone quarry from the Edo period but they definitely have that ’isekai’ vibe!

At the top of the mountain is Jikoku-nozoki (地獄のぞき) or ‘Hell’s View’. A stone point that hangs out over thin air!
